Trainer - REBECCA MENZIES
Rebecca is known by most as Becky and she started out by asking to ride out at the age of 8 at Walter Gott’s stables. It was riding ponies at first, progressing to thoroughbreds. Schooling took her through her ‘A’ levels and then before university she had a gap year, working in a local estate agent’s before seeing the post of racing secretary to Ferdy Murphy advertised. She started work for Ferdy in that capacity but a lot of hands on work with the horses led to the role of travelling head girl after 2 years. This then evolved to assistant trainer until Ferdy announced his decision to relocate his operation to France. It produced a ‘cross-road moment’, with several options. James Ewart who knew Becky from his time at Ferdy’s, offered her a position at his yard but it was time to grab the bull by the horns and take the plunge into becoming a trainer.
Becky got the job rolling quickly and had a great first season training at her first yard which was leased from Peter Beaumont (of Jodami fame). Becky was the youngest female trainer in Britain at the age of just 24 to train a winner – PISTOL BASC – FOR PANTHER ! She then got a flat licence as well and the first winner she trained was also for Panther – UNCLE BRIT – both horses have now been retired sound out of racing to good homes. Tony Kelly who was conditional rider for Ferdy is the stable jockey for N. Hunt. Becky is now based at John Wade’s yard where she leases boxes as her operation outgrew her previous yard.
